Hi, I apologize deeply that I only speak English and I probably won't get a response .....
English is fine - I'll provide a German translation below.

I have what looks like his birth certificate reprinted 20 years after the fact for travel purposes.
Not quite a birth certificate, but a Cetificate of Citizenship, giving indeed his date of birth and the names of his parents.
Now - how to continue?
He was a Swiss citizen after 1876 (when the new Civil Registry system was started), and although he may have lived abroad, was known to the Basel administration. So he should show up in the Civil Registry of the city of Basel. I recommend you contact this office - the
Zivilstandsamt - and ask if your ancestor can be identified plus (if yes) what you are expected to do to get a
Familienschein of his parents, possibly also his grandparents. Once you have more info, post it here for further advice.
What I can tell you from
Familiennamenbuch is that Hindermann have been citizens of Basel since 1565.
The library of the Swiss Genealogical Society keeps a copy of pedigree tables of the Hindermann family, written up by Reifner and Bryner. I would not be surprised if the
Staatsarchiv Basel also had a copy - which might be easier to get hold of: at least ask if they have got one, and would be willing to look for your ancestor, or tell you the time frame covered in these tables.
