Sprecher von Tschiertschen GR

Beitrag von cmbellman5 » So 29. Sep 2013, 05:17

I am researching the family of Theodore Sprecher, born 9 July 1850 in Zurich and died in 1920.
His family made pianos.
His parents were Christian Sprecher, 7 April 1810-1883 and someone Schönewald von Bon.
Theodore married Pauline Wirth, who may also have been known as Lindenmeir Wirth.
I would appreciate any info on the ancestors of Schönewald von Bon and Pauline Wirth.
Pauline Wirth is my wife's SOSA 11.

I am new to researching in Switzerland and need all the help I can get.

thanks in advance

Peter

Let me make an organisational comment first: only single families (surnames) should be discussed in each thread ... here only Sprecher in (of?) Zürich should be discussed. Related threads (e.g. due to a marriage) can then be linked to each other.
------------------------

Now on your question re Sprecher: as late as 1875 a Sprecher from Tschiertschen GR gained citizenship of Zürich. So your Sprecher family may have lived in Zürich, but without holding citizenship. There is no suitable entry, however, in the 1861 "Bürgerverzeichnis", which also lists residents without citizenship.

Sprecher have held citizenship in other communities of canton Zürich, as well as in other cantons - see Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz.
------------------------

Wirth should be discussed separately. However, as Wirth (see new thread on Wirth) is a very common name, it doesn't make much sense to start a new thread now without any hint on her citizenship ... which you will hopefully find out once your Sprecher have been tracked down.
------------------------

The situation is even more difficult with "Schönewald von Bon" (see new thread on Schönewald von Bonn): if Swiss, this would indicate that a Schönewald family held citizenship of Bon, but ... Schönewald is not a Swiss surname, and there is no Bon in Switzerland.
There are some Schönewalds in Germany in the region of Bonn (former capital of the Federal Republic) - could that be your family?

Thanks Wolf,
I am used to the French forum where the married couples are discussed together.
I have all the info on the Sprecher from Tschiertseschen I need.
We have a lithographed, handwritten book from around 1860 which details the whole family back for centuries.
I attach a copy of the relevant page, I want to trace the family of Christian's wife as far as I can.
I shall start two new topic threads for the woman.
Coud someone translate the page for me into English?
thanks
Peter

In Switzerland we have the Place of Citizenship, often over centuries, irrespective of where people actually lived. If we discuss a family (as defined by surname and place of citizenship), this therefore can include several lines over several centuries .... I hope it's obvious that we cannot discuss their partners in the same thread .... would be chaotic very soon.

In the contributions above I have linked partners for further discussions on these families.

Just some remarks

The pedigree branch of Hans Hans Sprecher-Wilhelm, the great-father of Theodor Sprecher-Wirth (*1850), ist published in the detailed family chronology of the Sprecher von Berneck family.
Christian Sprecher (*1810), the son of Hans Sprecher-Wilhelm, born in Tschiertschen, has married twice, first 1841 [Anna[ Maria Schönwald (1863†) und in 1865 Maria Catharina Müller, the daughter of Hans-Ulrich Müller und Barbara Studer. He had 5 children with his first wife and 3 with his second. Christian worked first with the famous piano manufacturer Jakob Eck in Cologne. After his return to Zürich he founded 1849 the piano manufacturing firm Sprecher & Bär (Sprecher & Comp.; Sprecher & Butte, and 1877 Sprecher und Söhne).
A brief summary ist also given in the Hist. Lexikon der Schwei, Bd.11 auf Seite 730.

Thanks Mutz,
I did not know of Christian's second marriage.
By the way, my Sprecher Book from the 1850s spells Berneck as Bernegg.
This forum has answered me well about the Sprechers and the family of Maria Schönwald.

Wolf,
Should I shall start a new thread for Theodore Wirth and daughter Pauline who married Theodore Sprecher?
Theodore Wirth was the manager or partner in the firm Sprecher und Söhne.
I dont know his citizenship. What is the best way to proceed?

Sorry for the slow response - I was on holiday.

There already is a new thread for your Wirth - see here. As we don't know the place of citizenship yet, I named it "in Zürich" (i.e. the person lived in Zürich at some stage) rather than "von Zürich" (inidicating a citizenship).

Have you contacted the Zürich Civil Registration Office yet - as suggested here?
