Thuli von Vilters SG
Looking for family history of my wife's grandparents. Anton John Thuli, born May 30, 1852 in Vilters married to Magdelena Justina Gruenenfelder, born Mar 12, 1854 in Sargans. I have a marriage date of Sep 3, 1878 but I have a birth date of their oldest child, Hedvine as Jun 10, 1878. Any help resolving those dates would be greatly appreciated. I would also be greatful for any clues to finding their ancestors. I believe that Anton's father may be Beat Thuli. Thank you very much.

Re: Thuli von Vilters SG
Welcome to the forum !
Let me start with a short comment on our conventions first: only single families (defined by surname and place of citizenship) are discussed in any single thread - but all discussions on this family will be in this single thread. Related (e.g. by marriage) families (like Grünenfelder) are discussed in separate threads - which can be linked to each other. I have therefore re-named your thread: only Thuli should be discussed here.
All I can say at the moment is: according to the Register of Swiss Surnames Thuli have been citizens of Vilters since before 1800. A citizen of Vilters, born in 1852, or rather his parents and the entire family, should be listed in the "Bürgerregister", which is kept at the St.Gallen State Archive; unfortunately one has to visit the Archive to be able to view the films.
Both, the marriage and the birth of the child (Hedvine is a name I have never heard of! Could it be Hedwig?) in 1878 should be recorded in the "Zivilstandsregister" - which, again, can only be viewed at the State Archive. I will check this during my next visit to the Archive, but will not be able to check "Bürgerregister" as well right now (too many requests "in the queue").
Just some remarks of Grünenfelder - although no details should be discussed here: they hold citizenship (since before 1800) in Sargans, but also Wangs and Mels (all canton St.Gallen). There are already threads on Grünenfelder of Mels and Grünenfelder of Wangs. If your wife's ancestor is actually from Sargans, a new thread should be started on this line. This information should be given in the marriage entry mentioned above - so let's check this first.

Re: Thuli von Vilters SG
My goodness, I never expected such a rapid reply. Thank you. As for the childs name it could very well be Hedwig. They had a niece whose middle name was Hedwig so that name is used in the family. I have seen it spelled as "Hedwin" and that is how my wife recalls addressing her. "Hedvine" is the spelling on her tombstone. As for your offering to do research that is very generous of you. You will find a contribution on your donate page in a few days.

Re: Thuli von Vilters SG
Well - I have some additional info and a few corrections for you:
According to the Civil Marriage Register Vilters on 01 Sep 1878 (the church marriage will have taken place a few days later) the couple were
Johann Anton Thuli, master shoemaker, citizen of Vilters, living in Vilters, and born in Vilters on 30 May 1852 as son of Johann Peter Thuli and Barbara Locher.
Magdalena Justina Grünenfelder, farmer, citizen of Vilters, living in Vilters, and born in Vilters on 12 March 1854 as daughter of the late Georg Grünenfelder and the late Verena Grünenfelder.
Their daughter Josephine Edwina was born in Vilters on 10 June 1879 (no birth registered in Vilters on 10 June 1878).
------------
A word of caution on the citizenship (Vilters) of Magdalena Justina Grünenfelder: Vilters and Wangs being a political community consisting of two citizen communities (Vilters and Wangs) there has been a lot of confusion, even in official documents. Magdalena Justina Grünenfelder will have been a citizen of Wangs - see here.
