My name is Ted Gross and I am looking for some information of my father August Karl Gross Jr. He, his mother and his two sisters, Bertha and Ida, left Speicher in 1919 to come to the United States. His father, August Sr., came to the United States in 1916.

Here is a copy of Grandmother Bertha's obituary posted February 19, 1937:
THE CHEHALIS BEE-NUGGET, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1937.v
Mrs. Bertlia Gross.
Mrs. Bertha Gross, aged 49 years,
of i-oute 3, Chehalis, died at the family
home Thursday night. She was
born in Switzerland, and came to
Chehalis from South Dakota about
two and a half years ago. She is survived
by her widower, August Gross;
a son, August, jr.; two daughters,
Mrs. Bertha Streuli of Orient, S. D.,
and Mrs. Ida Mueller of Orillia,
Wash.; four grandchildren; her
father, Karl Eugster of Switzerland;
two brothers, Emil Eugster of Cleveland,
O., and Jacob Eugster of Hollywood,

Her mother's name was Emma Ralt.

Do you have any information about these Eugster's? Also do you have any information about August K(C)arl Gross Sr.? He was from St. Gallen. His father's name was Alouis G(r)oss and mother's name was Pauline Eigenmann.

Only Gross should be discussed here - please, use the separate thread for Eugster von Speicher.
Hier bitte nur Gross diskutieren - Eugster von Speicher AR im eigenen Thread.

The problem with "St.Gallen" is that it is both, the name of the canton (=state) and the name of the capital city. There have not been Gross as citizens of the city of St.Gallen before 1943 - so your Gross ancestors will have been citizens somewhere else: there are several places of citizenship for Gross in canton St.Gallen before 1900, but also in many other cantons, as Gross is a fairly common name. As there are no centralised data in that time (early 20th century) the place of citizenship (less useful: place of birth) would have to be determined first for further effective research.
