Structure of contributions to the Swiss forum

Your enquiries should desribe as much detail as possible, and should be placed in the appropriate cantonal forum whenever possible - that's all - no more rules. On the other side, it will be attempted to stick to a uniform structure for responses, in order to make navigation within the forum easier for the visitors. The most important sources, used for many responses, are described in a separate contribution; this reduces the need for repeating identical information several times - for a single thread only the information from the source is quoted, not the description of the source.

Threads "Vorkommen [Name] in der Schweiz" (Occurences [name] in Switzerland) in the "Schweiz - Allgemein - Généralités" forum will usually give a summary from the Register of Swiss Surnames, point to articles published (or to be published) in the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland, and refer to resources mentioned in the "von Moos"-Bibliography. Such threads are usually "closed", i.e. it is not possible to send an "answer": discussions on single families or family lines should take place in the appropriate cantonal forums.

Nowadays the spelling of surnames is fixed - in earlier centuries it was often up to the person writing the records how a name was written down. Consequently with phonetically similar names like Rohner / Roner / Ronner the possibility of spelling variations has always to be kept in mind, also changes between the spelling then and today. Due to this, such phonetically similar names are often dealt with in a single posting.

Threads "[Name] im Kanton [Kanton]" ([name] in canton [name of canton]) contain whenever practical more detailed data from the Register of Swiss Surnames, i.e. with all places of citizenship - with common names and many lines gaining citizenship in any given community, usually only the first such occasion. In addition information from sources specifically dealing with a single canton, community or family may be included. Mentions in the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland or the "von Moos" bibliography will not be repeated, however.

Threads "[Name] von/in [Ort]" ([name] - of/in [name of community]) are the ideal place to discuss questions relating to a single family or line in detail. A "von (of)" in the title implies that the family holds citizenship of the community mentioned, whilst "in" implies that the family just lived there, without holding citizenship. To understand this, one has to be aware of the specifics of Swiss citizenship.

It follows from the above, that data to any given surname will often be split amongst several threads. It is therefore to be recommended to start with a full text search to get an overview of what has been published already.
