Müller von Wartau SG
Excerpt from the Wartau and Azmoos Genealogies, compiled by Jakob Kuratli (copies at Kantonsbibliothek Vadiana, St.Gallen, signature VS q 251/4-8 and 11-12).
The numbers "A/B" are taken from Kuratli and represent
A = number of husband (Wartau genealogies, unless Azmoos indicated by Az)
B = number of husband's parents
Az285 / Az109
Andreas Müller, 09 Feb 1777 - 04/07 Jul 1841, Schlossermeister (master smith) living in Trübbach, died from Wassersucht (edema); his "Hauszeichen" (used to mark belongings) is attached below.
marries 28 Mar 1802 Azmoos
Christina Flütsch of Seewis im Prättigau, daughter of Christian Flütsch and Christine Gassner, since 1809 certified midwife, died/buried 29/29 Dec 1841 aged 65 years (i.e. born about 1777).
Children:
01 Jan 1803 Anna Christina, marries 05 Aug 1824 Jakob Loser (Nr.Az479), died/buried 23/26 Aug 1866 from pneumonia.
22 Dec 1805 Andreas, died 16 Jul 1826, single, from Auszehrung (cachexia, consumption, tuberculosis).
31 Mar / 08 Apr 1810 Magdalena, marries 18 Dec 1821 Leonhard Koch (widower, Nr.Az450). [There seems to be some confusion between Leonhard Koch's two wifes, Anna and Magdalena Müller: his second marriage, as widower, with Magdalena is reorded on 27 Jan 1829.]

Re: Müller von Wartau SG
Wolf,
Thanks to your post on Anna, I have now found people I never thought I would be able to trace and definitely not confirm the information given to me years ago.
These are the names of the people my father wrote down when talking to the two schoolmasters in Fontnas, they are supposed to be the first born son of each generation:
Jacob Muller 1642 - 1672 + Anna Madlena Sturme (no dates)
Gorg Muller 18 Apr 1658 - 1729 + Dorothea Gabathulerin 1653 - 1719
Heinrick Muller 9 Nov 1679 - 24 Jul 1757 + Dorothea Seninn ? - 1750
Jorg Muller 1707 - 1778 + Elsbeth Schon ? - 1771
Jorg Muller 17 Feb 1744 - 11 Feb 1816 + Margreth Sifert 1752 - ?
Heinrick Muller 1 Dec 1785 - 25 Mar 1849 + Maria Kunz ? - 19 Sep 1857
Heinrick Muller 17 Apr 1825 - ? + Anna Barbara Sulser 13 Oct 1825 - ?, Married 27 Oct 1846.
Heinrick and Anna Barbara came to America in 1872 along with all their children except Regula who married Heinrich Gabathuler from Wartau - Azmoos.
George, the 10th child of Heinrick and Anna Barbara, married Genevive Hovi in 1889. George and Genevive are buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Ellendale, North Dakota.
This George is my greatgrandfather.
Any additional information that would fill in the blanks of the above, I would greatly appreciate. Along with any corrections to the spellings and dates. (I apologize for the lack of umlauts as I am technologically challenged.)
I am very interested in information on their lives. What they did, where they lived, their children, etc. Cultural things.
I have been unable to find any information online regarding the Hovi connection. All the information I have says she was from Switzerland and a Catholic. So, I will also be looking for any information on her as well.

Re: Müller von Wartau SG
Note that these are not Jacob's years of birth an death, respectively. He is first mentioned 1642 in an "Urbar" (land cataster) and died before 1672, i.e. he is mentioned dead in some document in 1672.cmmiller hat geschrieben: Mi 29. Mär 2017, 17:35 Jacob Müller 1642 - 1672 + Anna Madlena Sturme (no dates)
Anna Madlena Sturme (modern spelling most likely Sturm) was buried on 02 April 1690, i.e. died a few days before, aged 70, i.e. born ca 1620
Görg was indeed the first surviving(!) son of Jacob, and was buried 14 Herbstmonat (Sep) 1729. On 10 Nov 1678 he married Dorothea Gabathuler (details above). Her surname is Gabathuler - adding the "...in" at the end simply indicates she is female.cmmiller hat geschrieben: Mi 29. Mär 2017, 17:35 Görg Müller 18 Apr 1658 - 1729 + Dorothea Gabathulerin 1653 - 1719
Note the surname: Senn (female version Sennin); she was from Sevelen. I don't have a copy of their family sheet.cmmiller hat geschrieben: Mi 29. Mär 2017, 17:35 Heinrich Müller 9 Nov 1679 - 24 Jul 1757 + Dorothea Senn ? - 1750
Cannot comment on them - don't have copies of their family sheets.cmmiller hat geschrieben: Mi 29. Mär 2017, 17:35 Jörg Müller 1707 - 1778 + Elsbeth Schön ? - 1771
Jörg Müller 17 Feb 1744 - 11 Feb 1816 + Margreth Sifert 1752 - ?
Heinrich Müller 1 Dec 1785 - 25 Mar 1849 + Maria Kunz ? - 19 Sep 1857
Heinrich Müller 17 Apr 1825 - ? + Anna Barbara Sulser 13 Oct 1825 - ?
Hovi is not a Swiss name (official spelling today) - and I cannot really think of a modern spelling close to Hovi. So - if she was actually Swiss, the spelling of the name must have changed considerably - which might be the reason you couldn't find anything.cmmiller hat geschrieben: Mi 29. Re: Müller von Wartau SG
Thank you for the ascii codes. I shall copy them and keep them handy.
I have a document from the archivist in St. Gallen for Heinrick and Anna Barbara's information. Also Heinrick's parents.
I will post that information later.
I found Hovey's on Ancestry.com but none from Switzerland and I wondered. Will do some more research. Could it be German?

Wolf,
Reply to Mar 29 2017 12:35 pm post.
I am not familiar with the term "Urbar" (land cataster). Is it a book of the landowners in a particular area?
Can I assume that Jacob adn his family lived in Fontnas, a small local municipality, in 1642 and that he was a landowner there?

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urbarium for a short explanation in English.
See https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urbar_(Verzeichnis) for a more extensive explantion (and a few more images) in German.
Keep in mind that "landowners" in the modern sense didn't exist then.

Re: Müller von Wartau SG
I have been doing further research into the family of Jacob and Madlena as I have copies of their church baptismal register. Anna apparently went by her middle name. It was spelled Madlena in the register.

They had 5 children all told. Barbara - 1654, Madlena - 1655, Görg - 1656, Görg - 1658 and Margrata - 1661.
I wonder if he was the first born son of Jacob Müller, Amman, and Anna Sutphin of the same church.
I noticed the numbers in front of the their names - 160 and 161. What do these numbers mean and what are they used for?
Any information is greatly appreciated.

Re: Müller von Wartau SG
I have done further research on the family of Heinrich Müller and his wife Anna Barbara Sulser from Fontnas who came to the US in 1872.
Their second daughter, Maria, sister to Regula who stayed in Switzerland, married shortly after arriving in the US.
Maria was born 5 August 1852.
The family first settled in Vernon County Wisconsin.
Maria, who changed her name to Mary, married Casper Fopper on 11 May 1873 in Genoa, Vernon County, Wisconsin.
They had 3 children - Mary, Casper and Annie.
Casper died 28 October 1880 and is buried in the Walnut Mound Cemetery in Retreat, Vernon County, Wisconsin.
Casper was 20 years older than Mary. He also came from Switzerland.
He was a Union soldier serving with the 8th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin during the Civil War. They fought the war in Mississippi.
Mary remarried another man from Switzerland named Henry Wirtz (Wertz) in 1889.
They had 3 children - Eda A, Louise and Anna.
In 1905 Mary and Henry went to Lomond Municipality in Saskatchewan Canada. It was there they converted to the Latter Day Saints church.
Mary died in 1944 at the age of 92 and is buried in Saskatchewan.

Ulrick Müller, first born son of Heinrich Müller and Anna Barbara Sulser, was born 31 July 1850.
He came to the US with his parents and younger siblings on the ship THE QUEEN and arrived in the US on 23 April 1872.
His port of arrival was New York, New York.
On 14 February 1878, he married Anna Kraus in Vernon County Wisconsin.
The parents of Anna Kraus were Joseph Kraus and Rosalia Kraus. Ancestry.com shows the Wisconsin State Census of 1 June 1905, listing a Roselia Kross, age 67, married to a Joseph Kross, age 62, living in Monroe County Wisconsin. Roselia Kross's birthplace is listed as Hungary and her birthdate about 1838.

Müller von Wartau SG (Line B)
Cheryl, let me summarize what we know so far (above and private communication) about your ancestor Heinrich Müller. I am using the Kekule numbering, named after Kekule von Stradonitz, by English speaking genealogists also often called Sosa numbering. In order not to mix it up with the line described above, I add a leading "B" to the Kekule-number (although both lines converge with Görg Müller (18.04.1658-14.09.1729).

Re: Müller von Wartau SG
Wolf,
Thank you for the information you posted since late November last year. I am now able to return to my ancestor search.
Regards to Görg and Elsbeth, your post from Dec 2017, I found on familysearch's international genealogical index, a reference to a Görg Müller, son of Heinrich Müller and Dorothea Sennin, marriage on 1 July 1754 to a Barbara Wapp in Gretschins. It seemed strange since Elsbeth didn't die until 1771. Do you have any information on this marriage? My inclination is familysearch got something wrong.

Ulrich Müller
I have found no further reference to Ulrich Müller or an Ulrich Mueller after his marriage to Anna Kraus in 1878. I am wondering if he returned to Switzerland or perhaps Germany after his marriage. On the ship's log in 1872, he is listed as German and not Swiss as the rest of the family is listed.
Could he have returned to the Fontnas area, perhaps? He appears to have gone from the US by 1890.

This is indeed a bit confusing.cmmiller hat geschrieben: Fr 11. I have checked the death entry for Elsbeth Schön (buried 15.04.1771): she is described as "Georg Müllers ehl. Hausfr." with 38 years and 5 months of marriage, fitting the wedding date (18.11.1732). I would take the fact that "your" Görg Müller's wife died in 1771 for granted.
The only other Georg Müller in the relevant time frame was married to Elsbeth Stricker and died in 1749 - so he doesn't qualify for a second marriage in 1754.
I don't find a couple Görg Müller & Barbara Wapp in the Kuratli compilation nor the "Bürgerregister". The wedding is mentioned, however, in the marriage register: July 1754 (no day given). Geörg Müller is described as widower - no parents given. Could you, please, provide the link to the marriage listed by familysearch (I didn't find it) ... what could be the source for the parents' attribution?
For me the most plausible explanation would be that Geörg Müller, the widower, came from another parish and just married a Barbara Wapp from Wartau. The attribution of his parents may have been based on name and "plausible age" only, but would be wrong.

Re: Müller von Wartau SG
In addition to the Kuratli compilation (where information after 1875 might be missing) I have checked the "Bürgerregister" for Heinrich Müller and Anna Barbara Sulser: it only mentions that the family (apart from the oldest daughter, Regula) emigrated to Amerika in 1872. No mention that any family member returned to Wartau - this excludes a return as a possibilty. Family members may have returned to Europe, however, without getting in touch with their home town (not impossible, but unlikely).cmmiller hat geschrieben: Fr 11.
