GENEAL-FORUM

Tut mir leid.

Gruesse aus Pennsylvania, USA! I would like to determine if anyone has already documented the KAPPELER family tree from Wil SG. If not, then I seek assistance.

I have two generations that I am currently seeking to document:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
FIRST is the older generation, for which I have located the marriage citation and parish baptism records in the microfilm maintained by the Mormons.

Seeking:

• 1. Name Corrections - Unfortunately, I am not familiar with transcribing the old script handwriting and need corrections to the spellings of the names.
  2. Actual citations for the parish records, rather than just the Mormon microfilm.

Father: Jakob Thomas Kappeler was born on 24 Dec 1785
Mother: Maria Elizabeth Eisenring was born on 11 Jan 1790
Heiraten: 13 May 1813
Citation: "Schweiz, Heiraten, 1532-1910 ," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FVF1-FLQ: accessed 10 Jan 2013), Jakob Thomas Kappler and Maria Elisabetha Eisenring, 13 May 1813; citing Rickenbach B. Wil, Thurgau, Switzerland, reference ; FHL microfilm 958967.

Baptisms of Children (these are the ones I located in the microfilm, there could be others?)

SECOND is the generation that immigrated to the United States in 1875, and for which I have more validating evidence after 1875.

Seeking:

• 1. Name validations/corrections
  2. I would like to locate the St. Gallen records, for example the birth, baptism and/or marriage records.

I understand that the geographical region around Wil SG can be difficult to trace, as the surrounding towns cross into Canton Thurgau. The family's heimrecht has not been very clear.

Working with a genealogist for records in Canton Bern for Rosine Gÿgli's Gemeinde Utzenstorf, I previously identified two Kappeler baptism records in Kirchberg BE just south of where their mother must of had heimreckt in Utzenstorf BE. The earlier baptisms were not located there. However, the father was baptised in Wylen (Wil), and there are references to both Beckingen TG and Rickenbach bei Wil TG. As his baptism was recorded in the parish records in Wil SG, perhaps the earlier births were also in Canton St. Gallen.

Father: JOHANN KASPAR KAPPELER was born on 04 Jan 1824 (Baptised 09 Jan 1824)
Mother: Rosine Gÿgli was born on 05 Mar 1822, Gemeinde Utzenstorf - Bern
Heiraten: 27 April 1854
Citation #1: Kirchgemeinde Utzenstorf, Kirchenbücher 15:211 #8: an almost illegible entry dated 27 April 1854 and with only the date of April 23 recorded for the three banns (normally on three successive Sundays) that the proclamation of impending marriage should have been announced, the minister recorded the marriage 27 April 1854 of Johann Klyllen (???)
Citation #2: "Switzerland, Marriages, 1532-1910 ," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FVF1-K4Q: accessed 10 Jan 2013), Johan Kaspar Kappeler and Rosina Gyzli, 15 May 1854; citing Rickenbach B. Wil, Thurgau, Switzerland, reference ; FHL microfilm 958967. Children that immigrated to the United States together; unknown if there were others:

• 1- JOHANN KAPPELER was born about 1851
2- JOSEPH J KAPPELER was born on 16 Oct 1854
3- MARY KAPPELER was born about 1856 (May have been a wife at the time of immigration, rather than a daughter. Unknown)
4- LEO M KAPPELER was born on 25 Apr 1856
5- OTTO MARTIN KAPPELER was born on 11 Nov 1858
6- JOHANN THOMAS KAPPELER SR. was born on 06 Aug 1860
7- ERNEST ROBERT KAPPELER was born on 06 May 1862 in Kirchberg, Bern, Switzerland

Vielen Dank fuer Ihre Hilfe!
(It will please me to receive any information. Thank you very much for your assistance.)

Zusammenfassung des obigen Beitrags:
Im Taufbuch Wil SG finden sich eine Reihe Taufen von Kindern des (Georg/Jacob = Leseproblem?) Kappeler und der (Maria) Elisabeth Isenring (Eisenring):

• 25.09.1814 Maria Elizabeth Cecilia
  25.10.1815 Machua (Martha?) Elizabeth
  16.05.1817 Joan (=Johannes) Nepomuk
  17.11.1818 Maria Anna Elizabeth
  25.10.1819 Gall Pancratz
  23.11.1820 Maria Anna Catharina
  24.01.1822 Sebastian Gebhard
  09.01.1824 Johann Caspar
  21.12.1825 Jacob Thomas
  20.12.1826 Johann Nepomuk
  06.02.1828 Johann Baptist

• Gossau SG seit 1803
  Uzwil SG a
  Arbon TG b
  Au TG a
  Bettwiesen TG a
  Frauenfeld TG a
  Matzingen TG a
  Oberwangen TG a
  Raperswilen TG a
  Rickenbach TG a
  Tannegg TG a
  Wilen (bei Wil) TG a

Adam sends me the following information:

Quelle: Haushaltungsregister Rickenbach bei Wil, Film #958967, Seite 205.

Kappeler Jakob Thomas (24.12.1785-25.09.1857), son of Johann and Elisabetha Kupper, B[ürger = citizen] Rikenbach und Wÿlen.
marries(1) 13.05.1813 [no corresponding entry in the Rickenbach wedding register] [§]
Eisenring Maria Elisabetha (11.01.1790-23.07.1840), daughter of Johann Kaspar and Katharina Böhi.
Children:
15.09.1814 Maria Elisabetha Zäzilia [according to Wil baptismal register: 25.09.1814; there also her death date is noted: 08.09.1882]
25.10.1819 Gall Pankraz, m. 10.11.1856 (see page 208), d. 05.04.1889
23.11.1820 Maria Anna Katharina
24.01.1822 Sebastian Gebhard, m. Feb1851 (see page 202), d. 23.09.1888
04.01.1824 Johann Kaspar, m. 15.05.1854 (see page 206) [in Utzensdorf BE mit Rosina Gygli - see above]
19.05.1834 Joseph Alois, d. Juli 1889 (see page 210)

marries(2) 02.05.1841
Führer Anna Maria (17.04.1814-27.05.1858), daughter of Josef Anton and Anna Katharina Frik
Children:
10.01.1848 Johann Sebastian
28.08.1849 Johann Niklaus, m. 07.06.1875 (see page 207), d. 07.05.1921

[§] Comment added later: the wedding is recorded in the wedding register of Wil SG on 10(!).05.1813 (not 13.) / Maria Elisabetha Isenring is listed as living in Jonschwil - likely also citizen of Jonschwil (modern spelling = Eisenring). The second marriage (1841) is not recorded in Wil.

As mentioned above - there is no such wedding entry in the wedding register. Obviously the date was taken from the "Haushaltungsregister" (which is on the same film), and - whoever transcribed the information, just assumed that the couple got married in Rickenbach - whilst they (later) only lived there.

Of the cildren quoted above
25.09.1814 Maria Elizabeth Cecilia
25.10.1815 Machua (Martha?) Elizabeth
16.05.1817 Joan (=Johannes) Nepomuk
17.11.1818 Maria Anna Elizabeth
25.10.1819 Gall Pancratz
23.11.1820 Maria Anna Catharina
24.01.1822 Sebastian Gebhard
09.01.1824 Johann Caspar
21.12.1825 Jacob Thomas
20.12.1826 Johann Nepomuk
06.02.1828 Johann Baptist
the ones listed in italics do not show up in the household register - most likely they died very(!) early.

Adam sends me the following information:

Quelle: Haushaltungsregister Rickenbach bei Wil, Film #958967, Seite 206.

Kappeler Johann Kaspar (04.01.1824-?), son of Jakob Thomas and Elisabeth Eisenring, B[ürger = citizen] Rikenbach und Wÿlen.
marries 15.05.1854 [27.04.1854 according to Utzensdorf marriage register]
Gÿgli Rosina (31.03.1822-?) [05.03.1822 according to Utzensdorf baptismal register], daughter of Samuel and Elisbetha von Arx von Utzensdorf BE.
Children:
07.08.1860 Johan Thomas
10.05.1862 Ernst Herman Robert
06.04.1866 Julius Herman
Not mentioned are earlier children listed in connection with the immigration to the USA:
about 1851 Johann
16.10.1854 Joseph J.
about 1856 Maria
25.04.1856 Leo M.
11.11.1858 Otto Martin
That later children are not mentioned could be explained by interrupted communication with the home town - but why are earlier children missing in the Rickenbach record? Could it be that two Kappeler families emigrated together, and these "earlier" children actually belong to the other family?
