Einen guten Überblick über die sozialen Probleme während des 1. Weltkriegs gibt auch Kapitel 5 des entsprechenden Beitrags im HLS. Eine englische Version gibt es dazu aber auch nicht.

That's not exactly my area of expertise - but you could get in touch with the toy museum.JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Sa 5. Apr 2025, 01:22 Where might I find photos/illustrations of children's toys that were popular when my grandfather was a child (1901-) in Basel?

Re: Stohler von Arboldswil BL
As I've been reading through information on WWI in Basel, I've come across something I hadn't thought about before. Many sources state that because Switzerland was neutral that many think that men didn't have to leave their homes, which is not correct. Many men were sent to the borders to be ready to defend them. Apparently, being called up to go to the defense of your country didn't mean you were paid, so many families left behind lost their father/husband's financial support.
Is there a way to find out if Rudolf Stohler (1876) was sent to do military duty elsewhere?

Re: Stohler von Arboldswil BL
That would be a time-consuming search that will not answer your question with certainty. First of all, you would have to find the sheet for Rudolf Stohler senior in the Stammkontrolle of Basel-Stadt sorted by year of birth. There is then a reference to his military unit or units. In the corresponding Korpskontrolle, which could also belong to Baselland, you would find Rudolf's military services and assignments. Where exactly his unit (Landwehr based on his age) served during WWI (e.g. at the French border) can often only be found in the diaries of the captains, which are by no means always preserved.JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Mo 7. I know this is a long shot, but I noticed recently that Scouting was founded in Switzerland in 1912. Are there any records available of who was a Boy Scout by any chance? Grandfather Stohler would have been the perfect age for that I think?

It looks as if the membership lists prior to 1900 no longer survive. Apparently, the Basel Scout Section has handed over all older files to the State Archives.JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Mi 16. Apr 2025, 00:17 Are there any records available of who was a Boy Scout by any chance?

Since that was in the membership list sections, do they have one for Masonic Lodges? My GF Stohler was a Mason in America, so maybe he was in Switzerland too?

Membership of this organization was top secret. At first glance, I don't see any membership lists in the StABS for the period in question. But you could ask here.JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Do 17. Apr 2025, 01:13 Since that was in the membership list sections, do they have one for Masonic Lodges?

Re: Stohler von Arboldswil BL
My grandfather Stohler mentioned that he had been in the "Ski Patrol" while he was at University. He didn't give much more information to my aunt, but mentioned that he had been involved with rescues.
Do you think that would that be part of his military obligation? Or would this be something separate? And would there be any records of this?

Do you mean at the top right? The parents of Jakob Stohler-Tschan are noted there, with the reference to the first family book and the family number 159 for the parents Stohler-Rudin. From there you can then go back one generation to family number 108 of the grandparents Stohler-Schäfer and finally to number 56 Stohler-Rudin, Heinrich in turn also the son of Heinrich Stohler-Rudin!JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Sa 19. Johannes Stohler-Schäfer was a miller by profession, which is why his son Jakob Stohler-Rudin is labeled “Müllers”, i.e. son of the miller. Müllers was then probably used as the local nickname of the family, instead of the family name.

Re: Stohler von Arboldswil BL
For Jacob Stohler-Rudin https://memory.bl.ch/familienforschung/ ... r%20Ziefen it's written 7 May 1911 for his death and then below that is a word I can't figure out next to Liestel.
Next to his wife Barbara Rudin, is written a word I cannot understand at all. Next to that word is the 1.91. Is that where her family would be found since the 1.108. was Jacob's parents? So that would be the same book as the 108 but several pages back?
Underneath Barbara's name is a O with a dot in the middle.
Daughter, A. Maria has a O with a ~ in the middle.
Johann has a O with a - in the middle.
Their son Emil has a roman numeral III at the end.
What do all these symbols signify?
Children number 6-8 I cannot read their names can you?
Traditionally, in our family we have thought that both Jacob Stohler-Rudin and his wife Barbara were born in Arboldswil, is that what this document tells me?
Thank you for your patience with my many questions! I appreciate it very much.

After pondering this, is there any way to find out if he was the owner of the mill? And/or what mill it is and where it was located.Peter.D hat geschrieben: Sa 19. Yes, too many - at least for the limited time I would like to devote to answering them. In addition, many of your previous and presumably future questions can only be answered by on-site research in the respective archives. I would therefore recommend that you engage a professional genealogist for further research. You can find suggestions on the corresponding SGFF page.JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Mi 23. Das unleserliche Wort heist "Esthrhsjoggi" (Estherhansjoggi), der "Dorfname" von ihrem Vater Hans Jakob Rudin.

There is a word next to Anna Schaefer's name that I don't understand. It looks like an "h" then "Sulbischburg?" But when I type this into the computer it doesn't recognize the place. Is that her place of birth?
