It says 1895. Bummer, according to google was on a Tuesday.
I've tried hard to find a source that would help me read the family registers, but haven't found anything that is more than a few symbols. Am I overlooking a source?

Thank you for reminding me about Heimatort/Geburtsort. Sometimes I'm trying so hard to look at the paper that I have for Older German writing comparison that I forget about that.

Nicht ganz, eigentlich steht dort Selbisberg, eine alte Bezeichnung für Seltisberg, ich wollte dich aber nicht noch mehr verwirren.

Which is correct. I didn't check the full page (my mistake) - this symbol shows up all ober the place, so is unlikely indicating a given day of the week. As Walter suggested: it wil stand for either died or buried.JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Do 24. Apr 2025, 09:23It says 1895. Bummer, according to google was on a Tuesday.
For guidelines to read these registers: I don't think there are any general ones - most writers will just have their own rules. If you are lucky there might be an explanation at the beginning of a book (I have seen that with a few "Bevölkerungsverzeichnisse" in canton Zürich) - but most often you will just have to find out yourself - or ask here

I just received an email from my Aunt that said that when my grandfather Stohler had pleurisy, most likely during the WWI era, that he spent time in a Tuberculosis Sanatorium. Did Basel have such a place or would he have been sent away to one nearby?

Today I received this email from the Erbschaftsamt Basel-Stadt, regarding my great grandparents Rudolf Stohler-Kiefer and his wife Emma.

Included was only the very first page of the Inventory. I was happy and a little disappointed too. I had hoped for the full record and this says there isn't any more. Do you think that it is unusual for them not to have everything?

Re: Stohler von Arboldswil BL
The inheritance inventories always contained and still contain a complete list of all assets and liabilities of the deceased (Aktiven, Passiven, Bilanz), including those of the surviving spouse, signed by the responsible officials. In addition, a separate ruling on inheritance tax was always issued.
Ask the Erbschaftsamt whether they have destroyed (kassiert) these important parts for the period in question - or whether they simply can no longer find them.
Doesn't the only page say anything about the missing parts?

I've attached the two pages I received (with my grandfather's address erased by me) in case when I translated them I missed something.
Also I have written back and asked them your question.

In both cases, an inventory of the deceased's assets was taken in the presence of the deceased's nephew, as legally required.
Within the authority, there was also a separate section covering inheritance taxes. I don't know whether this section archived the missing documents itself.

This sentence is not entirely clear. It does not explain why the Office only retrieved or could only retrieve the first page of the inventory.JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Do 1. Mai 2025, 00:32 Weitere Informationen konnten aus dem Archiv nicht entnommen werden.

I'll let you all know as soon as I hear back from the Erbschaftsamt. I really hope that they're not destroyed. I was planning to use the inventory list to determine what was in the big crate. So far, my aunts have only been able to identify 3 things they know for sure were from Switzerland; the china set, a rug and a chair. However, I'm sure if I was able to ask them about other items it would jog their memories.Peter.D hat geschrieben: Sa 3. Mai 2025, 17:03 This sentence is not entirely clear. I noticed on Inventar cover page that it mentions Rudolf Stohler (Sr.) and his wife Emma were in two different hospitals. Is there a specific meaning to the two?

Re: Stohler von Arboldswil BL
I found this person when I was trying to find out more about Anna's father:https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Jakob_Sch%C3%A4fer But the dates don't fit her father nor her grandfather, so I think I'm completely off track here. However, one thing that I found interesting about the article is that he was described as apprenticing out to learn the trade of Miller. And that got me wondering... Is there some sort of record for apprenticeships? And where should I be looking to see what type of Mills were in the areas that my family lived? Thank you for your help.

Die Heirat von Johannes Stohler und Anna Schäfer war am 1. Februar 1813 in Reigoldswil (siehe Kirchenbücher Reigoldswil > Ehen 1766 - 1858 > PDF 27).

How does a person know to look in more than one place for the records? If I had found the first one, I would not have known to look for another. Or will records like that always be in both places?

I've come across mentions of the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland https://hls-dhs-dss.ch/de/articles/013576/2010-09-20/ several times and was wondering how reliable the information is considered. For example, is it more like Wikipedia where you can find good information but must always verify it or is this more like the Encyclopedia Britannica where you're supposed to think of it as very authoritative well sourced information? I hope my question makes sense.

Re: Stohler von Arboldswil BL
Ok, I just came across something while searching for photos of Bürgerspital Basel and the Felix Platter Spital in the year 1957 or close to it (I had only found either the modern photos or the one in 1849). My searching somehow came across this site: https://www.baslerstadtbuch.ch/stadtbuch/1957.html I'm not sure what it is that I have stumbled upon? When I first saw it I had hoped it would be a record of what happened in 1957, but the articles don't indicate that. Hope you can enlighten me.

The yearbook contains numerous articles of local interest that are independent of the respective year. At the end of each volume, however, there is a fairly detailed chronicle of the events of the previous year (download full book).JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Mi 14. As a semi-governmental undertaking, the HLS is quite reliable. Of course there are errors here too, but the authors and sources are carefully selected. You can find some important background information here.JaneAusten7 hat geschrieben: Mi 14. Re: Stohler von Arboldswil BL
I was trying to figure out the least "painful" way to translate the whole book of "The Stohler Family" by Walter Stohler (it only came in German) and I wondered what tools might help me. I first made a photo of the pages. Then I thought I would have to use Google Translate Text, line by line, copying and pasting the words. To my great surprise, I noticed that there was an "image" button this time! When I pasted the image into Google Translate Images I received a translated page that I could even download straight from Google Translate Images!
I'm sure everyone here has already figured this out, but since I didn't know about it, I wanted to mention it so others could use this great feature too!!!
